OCSD Arts & Culture Festival: Expression Unbound Belleville 2026

Expression Unbound 2026 is a Deaf arts and culture festival taking place in Belleville, Ontario, at the historic Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf campus. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

The festival is open to Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, and hearing people, including families, children and youth, Sir James Whitney students and alumni, artists, community members, organizations, educators, professionals, allies, and anyone who is curious and wants to learn more about Deaf culture, sign language, arts, and history. You do not need to know sign language to attend.

This festival was created to celebrate and showcase Deaf talent, sign language, visual storytelling, performance, heritage, and community connection across Ontario. Years ago, the Ontario Cultural Society of the Deaf (OCSD) hosted festivals and gatherings that brought Deaf communities together through arts, culture, and shared experiences. Over time, many people expressed how much these spaces were missed and how important it is to reconnect communities again.

Expression Unbound was created as a way to bring people together once more.

The festival will feature Deaf artist booths, community and organization networking spaces, access to the school's museums and Deaf history, the Vintage Hands project, and an evening performance showcase featuring Deaf performers from across Ontario. It also creates opportunities for Deaf youth, alumni, emerging artists, families, allies, organizations, and the wider community to connect, share experiences, learn from one another, and preserve Deaf cultural history for future generations.

For hearing visitors and those who may have never visited a School for the Deaf or attended a Deaf cultural event before, Expression Unbound is an opportunity to come, experience, learn, and connect. The festival welcomes people who are curious about Deaf culture and sign language and want to better understand the rich history and experiences of Ontario's Deaf communities.

Expression Unbound is more than an event. It is a space where sign language, Deaf perspectives, arts, storytelling, history, and community are visible, valued, and celebrated publicly.

This event is made possible through the dedication of volunteers, community partnerships, and financial support from organizations that recognize the importance of preserving and celebrating Deaf culture.

OCSD gratefully acknowledges the Ontario Deaf Foundation (ODF) for its financial support and investment in Deaf arts, culture, and community programming.

We also gratefully acknowledge the City of Belleville's Tourism Grant for supporting Expression Unbound and helping us welcome visitors to Belleville to experience Deaf arts, culture, history, and community.

OCSD continues to seek additional grant funding, sponsorships, and community partnerships to help Expression Unbound grow and expand its reach and impact for Deaf communities across Ontario.

Following the Expression Unbound Festival, the TRI-O AGM will take place the next day, bringing members together to discuss the future of the Ontario Cultural Society of the Deaf (OCSD), Ontario Association of the Deaf (OAD), and Ontario Deaf Sports Association (ODSA).

The AGM is an important opportunity for members to have their voices heard, ask questions, share ideas, and vote in the elections for two of the organizations. These decisions help shape leadership, programs, priorities, and the direction of the Deaf community moving forward.

Are you a TRI-O member? Members are encouraged to complete the registration form and submit their membership fee to participate in the AGM and voting process.
